Corrigan, Samuel

buried Ashburton Cemetery 28 October 1892 aged 63 years Area 24 plot 17

Another of the few remaining Crimean veterans has passed away in the person of Mr Samuel Corrigan, of Tinwald. He entered the Engineers at an early age, was present at the landing of the Allies and served during the whole of the siege of Sebastopol.

Sir W. Jervois, late Governor of New Zealand, was captain of deceased company. He subsequently entered the Horse Artillery and saw considerable service during the Indian Mutiny, taking part in many of the stirring events of that time. In the early history of volunteering in Ashburton Mr Corrigan lent considerable aid in the instruction of recruits in drill. Mr Corrigan was an old colonist, having landed in New Zealand early in the sixties. He first settled at Woodend and after residing there for some years came to Tinwald where he has spent the last fifteen years of his life. He died peacefully after a painful illness, leaving a sorrowing widow and a, numerous circle of children and grandchildren to mourn his loss.
